Fight the Frizz

Fight the Frizz

Oh, how much we crave for the long sunny days, beach trips, family BBQs and balmy evenings in the Summer.

Although, when it comes to keeping your hair smooth & tamed, the good 'ol frizz always seems to make an unwanted appearance.

This has become one of our most popular questions in the salon "how do I tame my frizz?!", so we've put together a few little things you need to know when it comes to frizzy hair.

What is Frizz?

Frizz is caused when the outermost layer of your hair (the cuticle) is raised, normally due to damage such as colouring, heat styling, UV rays, and other natural elements causing Keratin loss. Moisture enters into the hair strand causing it to swell creating the dreaded frizz factor. Unfortunately for us lucky ones... it's just the texture of our hair (sarcastic eye roll). So, if you're nodding your head in agreement right now with a full head of Hagrid hair, this blog is for you babe.

Being a frizzy-haired girl myself, Studio 8 have come up with some must-dos to keep your frizz at bay this Summer.

Shampoo and Conditioners

One of the easiest ways to reduce frizz and rehydrate your hair is to use the right shampoo and conditioner. I know a lot of you will think that what you’ve got from the supermarket is working... but when you tell your hairdresser that, watch her cringe. Gone are the days when supermarket hair care will suffice. It's time to listen to the trained professionals and care for your hair like it's supposed to be. I recommend asking your stylist at your next salon appointment what they recommend for your type of hair, keeping in mind that everyone's hair is different, plus you can even ask for a sample to trial the product before buying. Although I don't think you'll be disappointed.

Our favourite for taming unruly hair at Studio 8 is Kevin Murphy Smooth Again Wash and Smooth Again Rinse. Designed for dry, frizzy unruly hair, high in Keratin, smoothing your hair *without* weighing it down.

Styling tips

To all the lucky curly-haired ladies you have the luxury of letting your hair dry naturally, however, we know how hard it is to keep your curls in formation sometimes.

Here is how you can maintain your curls:

Step 1:

Wash your hair and towel dry softly by squeezing the hair gently. It is important to remember to not rub the hair with your towel as this will cause friction leaving the hair rough and more likely to become frizzy.

Step 2:

Once the hair is towel dry, add some curling balm and scrunch into the hair. We recommend Curl Manifesto by Kerastase. Their full range consists of shampoo, conditioner, balm and refresh spray (You can purchase all Kerastase products in our salon on your next visit).

Top Tip: You may need to reapply the curling balm or use a small amount of hair oil as your hair continues to dry.

Note: It is important to always blow dry your hair (unless you’ve got curls) as it flattens cuticles and avoids moisture getting into your hair. Avoid blast drying your hair as it will rough up your hair causing it to look even more wild and bushy than usual.

Use a hair dryer on medium heat with a brush to smooth it out, this is the best way to control those locks and give you soft silky hair.

Remember to always use heat protection in your styling products to prevent any further damage and help keep frizz levels under control. The Smooth Again Blow Dry Lotion is applied before blow drying to protect it from the heat, leaving your hair feeling smooth & frizz-free!

Natural oils

Washing your hair too frequently can strip out the natural oils in your head, leaving the hair feeling dry and brittle. If you swim or surf regularly we recommend adding a small amount of conditioner through the hair before entering the water and rinsing thoroughly afterwards with a comb and leave-in conditioner.

We highly recommend Pureology Colour Fanatic Spray. It is a must-have if you are a true beach lover. With 21 benefits in one spray, including heat protection, UV protection, hydration, preventing split ends, control frizz AND adding shine to your luscious locks. The go-to for our surfer and swimmer girls.

Keratin treatments

How they work:
A Keratin treatment is the most effective way to maintain gorgeous smooth locks all year round.

Your hair is made up of Keratin, therefore the treatment is putting the protein back into your hair, rebuilding damaged areas and smoothing the cuticle, which overall will increase shine and decrease frizz. Blow drying time is cut in half (win for all the long-hair girls) and your style will hold for MUCH longer even in humid climates.

Keratin treatments can last anywhere between 2-6 months, depending on the brand of Keratin you choose, the way it is applied and your lifestyle.

Note: Using a sulphate-free shampoo is a must. Shampoos containing sulphate give a lathering effect, which sounds nice in therapy but it is a hairdresser's nightmare. It can be quite harsh and actually strip the colour of your hair as well as the Keratin treatment.

Benefits of a Keratin Treatment

  • Reduces Frizz
  • Adds Shine
  • Softens Hair
  • Reduces Blow Dry Time.
  • Hold your Hair Styles for Longer.

There is a range of various Keratin Treatments, so we offer a free consult with one of our highly experienced stylists at Studio 8 to discuss your hair type and needs to find the best treatment that suits you, your hair and your lifestyle.
